SRAM Technology: Architecture, Benefits, and Applications

Static Random-Access Memory (SRAM) is a category of volatile semiconductor memory that retains stored data as long as power is supplied, without requiring periodic refresh cycles. How it works

SRAM appears in distinct deployment contexts across the technology landscape, each governed by different performance and power constraints:

Processor cache memory: The dominant use of SRAM is as cache memory at all levels of the processor hierarchy. A modern high-performance CPU may integrate between 32 megabytes and 192 megabytes of on-die SRAM cache across L1, L2, and L3 levels, with L1 access latencies of 4–5 clock cycles.

SRAM vs. DRAM: A 6T SRAM cell occupies approximately 50–100 times more silicon area than a 1T1C DRAM cell at a comparable process node. This density penalty makes SRAM economically prohibitive as a main memory technology at gigabyte scales. DRAM delivers cost per bit roughly two orders of magnitude lower than SRAM in commodity markets.
